MTP/MPO trunk cables can be single mode, they typically consist of OM3/OM4 multimode cables terminated with MTP/MPO connectors on both ends. The MTP/MPO connectors can be male (with guide pin on the contact interface) and female (without guide pin on the contact interface). MTP/MPO trunk cables are typically available in 12, 24, 48, or 72 fibers. These fibers are connected between two connectors in three different methods that are called method A, method B, and method C. While in method A fibers are straight through, in method B fibers are reversed connected. In method C, the fibers are pairs flipped.
Because a single MTP/MPO connector can bring together 12, 24, 48, or 72 fibers in a single interface, they are designed to provide high-density connections between network equipment. Moreover, They use a simple push/pull latching mechanism for easy insertion and removal. This allows shorter installation time and lowers overall cost.
The ANSI/TIA 568-3.D, (Optical Fiber Cabling and Components Standard, October 2016) defines three pinning or types for multi-fiber array systems: Method A, B and C. While one method is not preferred over another, the standard recommends that you choose a method in advance and use it throughout your installation. To maintain the proper polarity, there are three connectivity methods—A, B, C—that mirror the cable types. Each polarity method handles the transition from transmit to receive in a different manner.
1 . Method A, straight-through, is the most commonly used approach. It is pin 1 to pin 1 and uses Method A (key-up to key-down) MPO connectors.
2 . Method B is a crossover method (pin 1 to pin 12) and uses method B (key-up to key-up) MPO connectors.
3 . Method C uses flipped pairs (pin 1 to pin 2) and method A (key-up to key-down) MPO connectors. It does not offer a migration pathway to 40-/100-GbE.
